Three-story rebuilds here create the worst runs. Laundry lands on the second or third floor. The duct climbs 20 to 35 feet with two or three elbows, then terminates at a roof jack or high side wall. Every elbow costs you airflow. Screened caps on those terminations trap lint until nothing moves. Rerouting usually means finding a shorter path out, not cleaning the old one again.

The other common case is the opposite. Postwar tracts have garage and service-porch dryers on short exterior-wall runs, sometimes 4 to 10 feet.
