Why booster fans get installed here

Laundry moved upstairs. Three-story rebuilds and townhomes carry long vertical runs, 20 to 35 feet with two or three elbows, terminating at roof jacks or high side walls where screened caps trap lint. Marine-layer air keeps the lint damp. Damp lint packs instead of blowing clear. The dryer runs two and three cycles and the laundry room gets hot.

Often a booster is the wrong answer. Short exterior-wall runs off garage and service-porch dryers in postwar tracts are frequently 4 to 10 feet. That is a crushed flexible foil problem behind a dryer pushed tight to the wall. A recessed dryer box and rigid pipe fix it. Adding a fan to a short run just gives you a second thing to clean.

Installation is mostly about placement and power. The fan sits mid-run, past the manufacturer's minimum distance from the appliance. It needs a junction box and a trigger, either a pressure switch in the duct or a current sensor on the dryer. It must stay reachable through an attic hatch or a ceiling access panel. Never buried in a sealed wall cavity.

Condo stacked closets are the hard case. No clearance behind the units. Often no attic above. The roof termination belongs to the association.

The impeller collects lint too. Plan on clearing it annually.
